Somewhere outside, an ambulance is dying

Every few minutes I can hear its whines, its low uldating tone of pain. It whimpers pathetically, calling out for help. Unable to move, the only thing it can muster is to cry out, with every last  bit of life it holds. But no one answers the call.

Regular Show has sucessfully written itself out of my viewing habits

It used to be good, it used to be enjoyable. While the general Regular Show formula is the same, where normal events occur, then something bizarre and totally random happens, it still used to work. Case in point, “Just set up the chairs,” an episode I really enjoyed and still do.

In the episode, Mordecai and Rigby have a job to do, setting up the chairs, but they slack off by playing video games, and an evil video game demon comes out and wreaks havoc as a result, a problem they have to fix. A Good cause and effect, even if the effect is completely random and weird.

Now we get new episodes like “Picking up Magaret” where in the only reason for the episodes existence was to have Mordecai and Margaret kiss. The whole “wicket” gang, a group of croquet players who hate mobile phones seemed entirely phoned in, (pardon the pun). They acted as filler, which is a shocking thing to see in an eleven minute program.

The episode had no purpose, and just meandered in getting to the point. A fact that has been occurring every week as of late, and the only draw they put in to keep viewers entertained is the inclusion of eighties music. Something which was a nice addition, not something to be the sole reason for watching.

This always was Regular Shows basic premise and episode structure: normal stuff happens, then something bizarre happens, then an eighties song would be played, royalties permitting. It worked, it really did. But over one hundred episodes later, the formula has grown stale and no one is making a change, they’re instead just squeezing out what is left in the tube.

Hell, I still enjoy some of the older episodes and always will, but as of late it has gotten so half arsed and so lazy.

Afterall, there are great episodes like “Trucker Hall of Fame” which is great as it has emotion, good situational comedy to an effect, and character development. But that is why it’s great, as it deals with a serious issue and shows character reactions to the events, which are believable and enthralling.

But Regular Show has always lacked character development, and by the fourth season, seeing the same old situations occur with no one growing or changing as a result, it has begun to make me jaded towards it.

Hell, all  Regular Show offers in terms of enjoyment now, is a mildly satisfying ending or achievement, and an eighties reference that the viewer understands. A real half arsed attempt to keep viewers, and I feel it isn’t working.

They need to step up the game and take lessons from Adventure Time. Character development, consistent characters and character action, and a plot or story that gives something to the viewer beyond a bit of filler or some zany events that appear entertaining, but are actually droll and mundane.

And that’s saying a lot for a show, where every week a non-sequitur is the episodes focal point.
